There is a common misconception that specializing in everything is the best way to get clients.  Because if you are offering ANYTHING a person could need, then you have the highest chance of securing bookings!

Guess what… this is wrong.

You’re actually hurting yourself by trying to book too much.  You don’t want to be yelling into the void trying to talk to everyone.  If you specialize in everything, you specialize in nothing.

Have you ever heard the saying that you need to “narrow your niche” in business?  Let’s talk about what this means and why this is so effective in getting clients and giving great service.

MAYBE THIS DESCRIBES YOU:

WHEN DID I NARROW DOWN TOO SMALL?

Let’s say you choose one category: “family sessions”, or “hair highlights”.  If you are the BEST in this category, then there are going to be a lot of people looking for you.  But I think at least 2 categories is pretty easy to handle if you have the skill set.  The answer really depends how good you are at talking to this group of people.

Choose 1-3 categories to start with

Think about what you are really good at.  This should be what you want to specialize in.  If you’re starting out then don’t overdo it with styles that you really don’t know a lot about.  You can still practice those but just adding one or two in your galleries is watering everything else down.

You want to be hired because you are the expert

The point is that clients want to feel like they found the EXACT person they were looking for to solve their “problem”, or the service they need.  This is why showing too much makes them feel like you are not who they are looking for.  So I want you to actually become the best at whatever you are marketing as your specialities!

You can add more from there

If you master one category, then you can start offering others as long as you are able to really showcase your expertise in each one.

I hope this answers some questions about why it’s such a good idea to start really thinking about who you’re talking to and to “narrow your niche” to book more of the right people!
